A study by the Statistics Commission found that of the 2.1 million jobs created in the last decade as many as 80 per cent have gone to people born outside of the UK. It makes a mockery of Gordon Borwn's promise of “British jobs for British workers”. Pat Harrington, the General Secretary of Solidarity commented:-
“The then Work and Pensions Secretary Peter Hain initially said 800,000 foreign workers had taken jobs in Britain since 1997. This was later revised to 1.1 million. The Statistics Commission seem to think it is still higher. We should remember that the Home Office predicted that only 5,000 to 13,00 workers would come here from the new EU States.”
