08/05/2009 - A small move toward fairness on tips

Employers are to be banned from using workers' tips to boost pay to meet minimum wage levels it was announced on May 6th.

Workers in cares, restaurants and bars will be guaranteed fair wages when the law is changed in January. Customers will know that their tips will not be used to top up the salaries of staff.

Adam Walker, the President of the Solidarity Trade Union, welcomed the move:-

"This is some good news for the poorly paid in bars, restaurants and hotels. We need to build on this to ensure that 100% of tips go to staff. Till we achieve that I suggest that consumers pay tips in cash to ensure that the staff who have impressed you with their service get the full amount."
