Council staff - such as home carers, nursery and school meals workers, teaching assistants and librarians are facing a pay-freeze. The Tory dominated Local Government Association (LGA) wants to ensure that they get no pay rise this year. They've refused to even talk with the workers' union reps about a pay rise. This is despite central government handing councils an above inflation 4 per cent grant increase for 2010.
Two thirds of local government workers already earn less than £18,000 so the pay-freeze is hitting hard. The Tories, nationally, have already threatend a pay-freeze next year too.
Solidarity has called for workers to indicate their anger and rejection of planned job and wage cuts in the run-up to the General Election.
