The Eyjafjallajokull volcanic eruption has stranded air passengers around the world (including this writer!). We should also spare a thought for the workers, however. When I rang the helpline of my airline they sounded as if they had been at the receiving end of many frustrated and angry calls. And, let's face it, a volcanic eruption is hardly their fault. That, however, may be just the start of their problems.
Jobs could go in the airline industry as bosses look to claw back lost profits. Some companies - particularly ground services providers - might also press workers to take unpaid leave if disruption continues. This in tough times when workers need every penny they can get.
Any government help to the air industry should have strings attached designed to safeguard jobs, pay and conditions.
