23/02/2012 - Bittersweet news for Peacocks

FURTHER to our recent article concerning Peacocks (1) it has just been announced that the Edinburgh Woolen Mill have just bought out the troubled fashion retailers.  This is bittersweet news for the workforce.

As it stands, Peacocks employed about 9,000 people across the UK and had 563 stores and 48 concessions.

At the moment, estimates vary at how many shops will be closed (and jobs lost) throughout the whole of the UK.  Solidarity has reproduced a list – below - published on the web-site of BBC Wales (2).  However, it may be far from complete.  Sadly, only time will tell.

However, what can be confirmed is that around half of the 500 staff based at the company's headquarters in Cardiff have already lost their jobs.

According to Wales Online (3)  the Dumfriesshire-based Edinburgh Woolen Mill - which also bought fashion brand Jane Norman out of administration - acquired
“the Peacocks brand, together with 388 retail outlets and its logistics functions in South Wales, for an undisclosed sum. However, the news was not good for all Peacocks staff. The shutters are coming down today on 244 Peacocks stores, with 3,100 staff losing their jobs.”

This was despite nearly 55,000 people signing a massive petition – organised via social networking sites (4) and in-store petitions - calling for Peacocks to be saved.

The EWM takeover of Peacocks has been secured by funding from Barclays and Santander banks.  Peacocks’ Bonmarché business was sold to Sun European Capital last month.
