More than 2,000 staff from the collapsed UK parcel delivery service City Link are to be made redundant on New Year's Eve, the RMT union says.
Staff learned on Christmas Day that the company had gone into administration, in a move described as "disgraceful" by the RMT.
Talks between union officials and administrators Ernest and Young were held on Saturday afternoon.
Ernest and Young had warned of "substantial redundancies".
Mick Cash, RMT general secretary, called the situation a "despicable and callous manipulation" of thousands of workers.
Pat Harrington of Solidarity Union commented:
"Unlike Scrooge there is no sign of City Link boss Jon Moulton repenting. Instead he is blaming the Unions for leaking his plans!"
Editorial note: Jon Moulton is the boss of City Link. He is a millionaire Tory party donor who owns a house in London’s Belgravia and a vineyard in Kent.
