28/02/2020 - Tories fail on flooding

Floods Tory FailFirefighters union, the FBU, has criticised the “shambles” of Boris Johnson’s flooding response, saying that he should be “ashamed” of the government’s failure to plan for floods in the long-term.

Funding for fire and rescue services in England has been cut by £141.5m over the four-year local government finance settlement, 2016/17-2020/21, including a £3.2m cut to the services covering areas with severe “risk to life” flood warnings.

Solidarity general secretary, Pat Harrington, commented: "The Tories should give our Firefighters the resources they need to respond to the floods. People need their help desperately and their union, the FBU, should be listened to and respected. Ignoring the expertise of these workers and their Representatives and failing to give them the tools they need to do the job is foolish."
