May Day is our day! In recent years May Day has been celebrated as a Public Holiday which has meant the day constantly changes to coincide with the nearest Monday (this year the 5th). We want to celebrate it on the Authentic May Day - May 1st (this year a Thursday) and hold activities on that day. We recognise, however, that many members will want to continue activities throughout the Bank Holiday weekend when they may be off work. A national Press Statement is being distributed to the media and articles explaining the significance of May Day for Solidarity appear on our website. Here is how you can help. 1. Write to your local press at least a week prior to May 1st advertising the day and the Union. Here is a sample letter: "FOR PUBLICATION Dear Editor, Ever since May Day has become a public holiday the day has changed each year to coincide with the nearest Monday. May 1st (this year on a Thursday) however is the authentic day for celebrating the traditional 'First day of Summer' and 'Workers Day'. 'Workers Day' has its roots in the 19th century demand for an eight hour working day. As the patriotic Trade Union Solidarity says "Since British workers find their pay and working conditions eroded under renewed and relentless pressure from ruthless bosses and cheap non-unionised migrant labour; the need for a militant patriotic union to fight their case has never been stronger. Other Unions heavily connected to the Government may try to avoid these issues but we will not. May Day is truly our day. Yours sincerely” (Add your name, address and telephone here) 2. Distribute the special recruitment leaflet (samples enclosed) for distribution in the days running up to May 1st. These can be given to friends & neighbours and left on buses and trains. 3. Leaflet a tube, train station, marketplace or High Street with friends on the day. 4. Take photographs of your activities and send in to us with a short report. 5. Those who get the E-mail edition of this bulletin will also find attached a May Day advert which can be placed in any bulletins or publications which they may control or influence. Extra copies of this leaflet can be obtained by contacting us at

or by ringing Adam Walker on 07713411198. This is an ideal opportunity to promote the Union as a viable Trade Union so we hope you all play your part. Together we are strong! HSBC Account Can we once again remind members that the HSBC account is being phased out. Membership payments will shortly only be accepted if paid into our Bank of Scotland account. Please ensure that if you were one of the few paying into the HSBC account you have changed over. If you are in any doubt or require a form please contact Adam Walker on the above number. Contact Fund One of the suggestions made at the recent A.G.M. was that the Union should have a landline for potential and actual members to contact. This wouldn't need to be a manned line and an answer phone would record messages and allow us to deal with them. To install a landline, answerphone and pay for the first quarter and an answer phone will only cost us around £250. Please forward a contribution now and keep Solidarity moving! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I enclose a donation of £________ towards the Union 'hot-line' (Cheques made out to Solidarity) Name........................................................................Address........................................ ..............................................................................e-mail ............................................. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
