Two proposed amendments to the forthcoming Employment Bill were rejected by the Commons this week. One of these amendments sought to make it easier for Trade Unions to expel individuals from membership for 'political' reasons. Those left-wing Labour/Trade Union M.P's backing the amendment had members of the British National Party specifically in mind. Although the (Labour) Government intend to make it permissible for Unions to expel someone for their politics it must be in their rulebooks and must follow due process. Far-left politicians wanted the right to expel whomever on their say so. Solidarity General Secretary Patrick Harrington said "The Government are quite wrong to allow unrepresentative Bureaucrats in the establishment Trade Unions to expel members because of their politics. The defeat of the amendment means at least they will have to justify their actions. The suggestion that the BNP wants to infiltrate Trade Unions is laughable since such Unions fund the Labour Party and all kinds of bizarre causes. They have already been infiltrated but not by the BNP! In reality this is motivated by political spite. He also said "I dont understand why anyone would want to be a member of these intolerant and unrepresentative institutions. They turned their back on the British Worker years ago. There is Trade Union that does not discriminate on political grounds and looks after the interests of all its' members, black, white, left or right and that is Solidarity. Anyone who fears being expelled fromor is dissatisfied with the posturings of their existing Union only has to contact us to be sure of a warm welcome."
